Here we have a 1959 650 preunit motor all in parts...I'm going to rebuild it and try to make it fire off a unit construction exhaust cam using an electronic ignition ;I've heard myths that its been done; But have never personally seen it..
Take note below; The factory exhaust cam was pulled and a later model cam from a early 60s 650 unit construction engine was installed,.. With new bearings, cam bushings, wrist pins, rod bearings and replaced sludge-trap; A early 60s unit construction crankshaft was also fit into its proper place..
Now, Here it sits with the cams and crank; And all its moving parts moving nice and smooth ,..So, now it's time to tear it all down and start some machining work,..I found a machinist by posting on one of the few web sites that I frequently visit while I'm bench racing; I came across Gary at Dutchman Fabrication; The Man has patients, and ,.. He takes the time to measure EVERYTHING !!

Pictured below are the cases with the new timing cover sitting in place. I can't begin to describe the work Gary put into this,. My plan was to cut out the points bucket on a unit construction timing cover and simply weld in place,..But we all know what happens when we "plan" something.. Nothing goes as planned !! After unsuccessfully fitting the cut out points bucket to the cover ,.. Gary wound up machining a new points bucket from a round billet of aluminum to reduce the gap due to the contour of the cover ,...
